Abstract
Excuse my French
A journey through the obscene Latin vocabulary from Catullus to the tituli graphio exarati
What connects the verses of two sophisticated authors like Catullus and Martial with the offensive phrases that ordinary people in Roman antiquity engraved on walls, as a joke or out of spite, to the detriment of enemies and rivals? It is, of course, the vast amount of obscene Latin vocabulary, of which there exist only scant and isolated traces in the rest of Latin literature.
This conference aims to demonstrate the importance of studying these sources, which are essential to paint a more complete picture of ancient Roman society, by bringing into focus what still eludes us.
