António Franco Alexandre

Holds degrees from the Université de Toulouse (BA, 1966; PhD, 1969), Harvard University (MA, 1971), and Universidade de Lisboa (PhD, 1996).   His main interests include moral philosophy, political philosophy, and aesthetics.  Has written extensively on Hume’s political philosophy, and published several books of poetry; he is one of the main contemporary Portuguese poets.  He taught frequently in the Program between 1998 and 2009.

Manuel Alexandre, Jr.

Holds degrees from the Universidade de Lisboa (BA, 1974; PhD, 1986; “Agregação”, 2000) and from the Baptist Theological Seminar, Denver (MDiv, 1964).  He was the head of the Baptist Theological Seminary and is pastor at the Baptist Evangelical Church of Amadora.  His main interests include ancient rhetoric, the Biblical literature, and Philo of Alexandria, on whom he has written extensively.  He was the editor and one of the translators of Aristotle’s Rhetoric.  He taught frequently in the Program between 1994 and 2006.

R.M. Rosado Fernandes (1934-2018)

Held degrees from the Universidade de Lisboa (BA, 1956; PhD, 1962).   He was the translator of Thucydides, Aristotle, Horace and Heinrich Lausberg;  he published a memoir in 2006.  He was president of the Universidade de Lisboa (1979-1982), member of the European Parliament (1995-1999), member of the Portuguese Parliament (1999-2002), farmer, and rowing champion.  He taught in the Program between 1991, our first year, and 1994.

Maria de Lourdes A. Ferraz

Holds degrees from the Universidade de Lisboa (BA, 1968; PhD, 1982; “Agregação”, 1993).   Her interests include the history of poetics and the relations between literacy and literature.    She is the author of, among other works,  A ironia romântica (1987) and the general editor of the Dicionário de Personagens da Novela Camiliana (2003). She taught frequently in the Program between 1991, our first year, and 2000.

José Miranda Justo

Holds degrees from the Universidade de Lisboa (BA, 1975; PhD, 1990), namely a doctorate on History of the Philosophy of Language. Has translated, among others, works of Hamann, Herder, Novalis, Kleist, Nietzsche, Kafka, Rilke and Kierkegaard.   Has taught in the Program between 1993 and 2015.

Manuel S. Lourenço (1936-2009)

Held degrees from the Universidade de Lisboa (BA, 1964; PhD, 1982; “Agregação”, 1998) and from Oxford University (MA, 1969), where he studied under Elizabeth Anscombe and Michael Dummett.  He was the author of, among others,  A espontaneidade da razão (1986) and Os degraus do Parnaso (1991), the Portuguese translator of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and Philosophical Investigations (1987), as well as  the author of several books of poetry and fiction collected in O caminho dos Pisões (2009).   He taught frequently in the Program between 1991, our first year, and 2005.

Joaquim Manuel Magalhães

Holds degrees from the Universidade de Lisboa (BA, 1969; PhD, 1979; “Agregação”, 1988).   He has published many books of poetry, and is a major contemporary poet.    He has translated Spanish poetry, Dylan Thomas, Konstantinos Kavafis and Anna Akhmatova.  Has also worked as a critic and columnist, having published books on Dylan Thomas and contemporary Portuguese poetry. He taught frequently in the Program between 1993 and 2012.
