The School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon structures its research activity around four nuclear academic areas: Linguistics, Philosophy, History, and Literatures, Arts and Cultures. Each of these domains is supported by specialized research centers that consolidate the faculty’s role as a leading institution in the Humanities. In Linguistics, the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon advances both theoretical and applied studies, while Philosophy is strengthened by a center fostering reflection on ethics, politics, and cultural thought. The area of History is anchored by the Center of History of the University of Lisbon, the Center for Archeology, and and Institute of Art History, which integrate research across different periods. Meanwhile, Literatures, Arts and Cultures are enriched by centers dedicated to national and comparative literary studies, as well as to the exploration of artistic and cultural phenomena in global contexts.
Altogether, the School hosts ten research centers and several dedicated chairs, ensuring that the School’s scientific work is not only deeply rooted in the Humanities but also engaged with broader cultural, social, and technological discussions.
