COURSE DESCRIPTION

The PhD in Comparative Studies offers advanced 3rd cycle training in the field of Literature and Culture Studies - specialty of Comparative Studies, as well as in the fields of Translation and Art Studies - specialty of Interart Studies.

Since this is a PhD programme with 240 ECTS, students are expected to complete a dissertation by the end of their 4th year.

The first two years are devoted to advanced curricular training: year 1 consists of a set of 5 core seminars (languages of instruction are Portuguese and English), and students are also invited to undertake supervised preliminary research in collaboration with one research group of the Centre for Comparative Studies; year 2 is defined by supervised individual and methodological training. At the end of semester 4, all students are required to present and discuss their dissertation plan before a Qualification Board composed of the supervisor(s), an external evaluator and the course director.

The other two years constitute a period of research, thesis writing and integration in the scientific community, including some short international mobility. By the end of semester 8, students deliver their theses.

PhD students in Comparative Students are also "members in training" of FLUL's Centre for Comparative Studies. Therefore, they participate in the research dynamics of this Research Unit funded by FCT.

SCHOLARSHIPS 

Between 2020/2021 and 2023/2024 the Centre for Comparative Studies offered 6 PhD research scholarships for students enrolled  in the PhD in Comparative Studies.

Between 2015/2016 and 2019/2020, the PhD in Comparative Studies has been PhD-COMP - International FCT PhD Programme in Comparative Studies, a partnership between the University of Lisbon and the Universities of Bologna (Italy) and Leuven (Belgium). The PhD functioned as an FCT-funded programme, awarding a total of 25 scholarships.

APPLICATIONS

Applications are continuously open, but with the selection deadlines. Students who want to start the PhD in the first semester of the academic year must submit their applications until June 15th; students who want to start in the second semester of the academic year must submit their application until November 15th.

The MA in Comparative Studies offers advanced 2nd cycle training in Comparative Literature and Interarts Studies.

Being a 2nd cycle course with 120 ECTS, the MA in Comparative Studies consists of two components: a curricular course during the 1st year, corresponding to the postgraduate diploma (60 ECTS), and a methodological course to support the elaboration of the dissertation, culminating in its public defense at the end of the 2nd year (60 ECTS).

In the 1st year, students attend five seminars: 4 compulsory seminars (Topics in Comparatism 1, 2 and 3 and Interarts Studies) and one optional. The optional seminar can be attended in the 1st or 2nd semester, choosing from the offer of the corresponding year of any FLUL 2nd cycle program.

At the beginning of the 2nd year, students must register their dissertation project, indicating the supervisor, at the Academic Services of FLUL. In this second year, students attend two methodological seminars, organized in a flexible way in articulation with the development of the individual research and the elaboration of the dissertations, which should be between 25,000 and 35,000 words.

The Programme in Comparative Studies (PEC) is a unit of the Area of Literatures, Arts and Cultures (LAC) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL), and offers master’s and doctoral courses which aim to provide advanced training in the field of comparative studies, stimulating students to investigate the relationships between texts and different forms of art, as well as between different media, cultural contexts and systems of knowledge. The PEC’s objective is to promote the renovation of the field of the Humanities by encouraging students to look beyond boundaries between disciplines and nations, engaging them in practices that foster discussion and problem solving, critical participation, rigorous thought and autonomy in the face of diversity.

The Programme in Comparative Studies is the result of the development of the master’s programme in Comparative Literature, founded in 1991 as part of the first interdepartmental experiments undertaken at the post-graduate level in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. Since its creation, a wide variety of professors have participated in the Programme, both as seminar teachers and supervisors of master’s dissertations or doctoral theses. These have included members of the FLUL’s Departments of Classical Studies, English Studies, Germanic Studies and Romance Literatures.

The Programme also prioritises links with international institutions and consortia, namely with the LACE: Literature and Change in Europe network (which includes the universities of Aarhus, Bologna, Granada, Leuven, Lisbon and Tartu) and The HERMES Consortium for Literary and Cultural Studies (which consists of the universities of Aarhus, Giessen, Helsinki, Leiden, Leuven, Lisbon, UCL-London, Prague, Santiago de Compostela, Utrecht and Wisconsin-Madison). Since 1994, the PEC has also benefited from an exchange scheme established with the Department of Comparative Literature at Indiana University – Bloomington, which permits the teaching of one of the Programme’s core seminars by a professor from this institution every other year.

In order to introduce master’s and doctoral students to the dynamics and methodologies of advanced research in Comparative Studies, the PEC maintains a close link with the investigations undertaken at the FLUL’s Centre for Comparative Studies, a fact which permits students to play an active role in national and international projects. In this respect, the PEC also welcomes researchers who wish to develop individual post-doctorate programmes.
