The Library of Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL) has more than a century and a half of history. It arose from the Library of Curso Superior de Letras (CSL), instituted by the king D. Pedro V, in 1858.

Between 1859, the year of its founding, and 1959, when it was installed in FLUL's building, designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro in Cidade Universitária, FLUL's library was located inConvento de Nossa Senhora de Jesus da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, in Bairro Alto. Since 1834, this building is the headquarters of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. At the request of king D. Pedro V, this Academy provided some space for the CSL setup. By the Decree-Law of March 22^nd, 1911, CSL gave place to Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, and remained in the same building till 1958.

At the end of the 1980's, the Library began a reorganization and modernization phase, beginning the process of computerization, of which it was a pioneer in the University of Lisbon.  Since of its creation in 1998, it integrates the Integrated System of Libraries of the University of Lisbon [Sistema Integrado de Bibliotecas da Universidade de Lisboa (SIBUL)], taking part in the daily maintenance of the Union Catalog of Libraries of the University of Lisbon (Catálogo Colectivo das Bibliotecas da Universidade de Lisboa).

In 2000, the new building of the Library was inaugurated, with a covered area of approximately 6.600 , designed by the Dutch architect Harro Wittmer, located north of the building designed by the architect Pardal Monteiro. It was designed to accommodate the Central Library and the 22 small libraries that were in the several departments and institutes of FLUL. They merged together and then became Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa Library.

Simultaneously to the relocation of the Library to the new building, a change and adaption to the respective organizational and functional structure was made, which resulted with the creation of the Library Division, in 2005. This is one of the seven Divisions that integrate the current FLUL services structure, in order to respond effectively to the challenges and demands of its users. More recently, in 2019, the organizational and functional structure of the Library Division was updated by Deliberação n.º 709/2019, Diário da República, 2ª série, n.º 116 19 June (Regulamento dos Serviços da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa).

A Faculdade de Letras participou, pela primeira vez, na educaANGOLA - 4.ª Feira Internacional de Amostras do Sistema Educativo. Esta feira anual, que decorreu entre os dias 6 e 9 de Novembro, em Luanda, contou com a participação de diversas entidades públicas e privadas, ligadas ao ensino, incluindo a Universidade de Lisboa, com cinco escolas representadas.

O Dr. Fernando Mascarenhas, Presidente da Fundação das Casas de Fronteira e Alorna, faleceu no dia 12 de Novembro de 2014 aos 69 anos. Ex-aluno da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, foi uma das personalidades convidadas pela FLUL para proferir uma lição pública no âmbito das comemorações do seu Centenário, em 2010 ("Da Faculdade de Letras às Actividades da Fundação das Casas de Fronteira e Alorna – uma linha da minha vida").

O Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival tem vindo a afirmar-se como um dos maiores eventos culturais em Portugal, desde 2007.

O Projeto 189 – "Universidade de Lisboa em bicicleta" venceu, com 4.588 votos, o Orçamento Participativo (OP) 2014 da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, na categoria dos projetos entre 150.000 € e 500.000 €. Os resultados foram divulgados, a 11 de novembro de 2014, em cerimónia pública nos Paços do Concelho.
