Os registos bibliográficos da Biblioteca Ultramarina, depositada na Biblioteca da Faculdade de Letras no âmbito de um protocolo de divulgação, preservação e conservação celebrado com a Caixa Geral de Depósitos, não se encontram integrados no catálogo colectivo da ULisboa pelo que a pesquisa de existências deverá ser, obrigatoriamente, realizada com recurso ao Catálogo Memórias de África e do Oriente. Este catálogo reúne registos bibliográficos de várias bibliotecas de instituições parceiras do projecto Memórias de África e do Oriente, espalhadas pelo mundo.

Para pesquisar a totalidade dos registos bibliográficos que constituem a Biblioteca Ultramarina, introduza a expressão CT BNU, correspondente ao campo da cota, na caixa de texto e carregue no botão "pesquisar".

Pode restringir os resultados da pesquisa através da realização de pesquisas complexas cruzando o campo da cota com outros campos de pesquisa, através da utilização do operador booleano AND. Exemplo: (CT BNU) AND (DE Angola).

Recognition of foreign PhD degree

If you completed your PhD abroad it is mandatory to request its recognition in Portugal to comply with the Portuguese legislation concerning the recognition of foreign qualifications (regulated, since January 1st 2019, by the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th; Decree-Order no. 33/2019, of January 25th).

You can request the recognition of your foreign PhD at the University of Lisbon Foreign Qualifications Service. You may also request the recognition of your foreign PhD at the DGES (Direcção-Geral do Ensino Superior).

Application for working visa and residency

If you are a non-european union/european economic area national, please check the Diplomatic Portal of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign AffairsPortal of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs for guidelines on how to apply for a National Visa at the Consular Post of your residential area. You may also need to schedule a meeting at the Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo (AIMA, I.P.).

You will be applying under Article 90, Paragraph 1 (Statutory Law no. 23/2007, of July 4th): for a Residence Permit for Teaching, Highly Qualified or Cultural Activity.

If you are a european union/european economic area/switzerland citizen and intend to stay in Portugal for a period exceeding three months, please apply for your Registration Certificate for EU/EEA/Switzerland Citizen.

VAT and Taxes

VAT Number

Once in Portugal, you will have to register with the Tax and Customs Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, AT) to have a VAT Number (NIF). You will need it to sign the contract and carry out any official or legal activities in Portugal, such as renting a house, opening a bank account, signing a mobile phone contract, etc.

Taxes

If you have income in Portugal, you must file a personal income tax return (Declaração de IRS).

The annual personal income tax return is submitted typically between April 1st and June 30th of the following year (Ex: IRS of 2021 is submitted between April and June of 2022).

The submission is made online at the Tax and Customs Authority Portal, accessed with your fiscal data (NIF and portal password). To obtain these data, you have to register here.

Tax Incentive Regime for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI)

Professors and researchers who are taxable persons resident in Portugal after January 1st, 2024, and have not been resident in Portuguese territory in the previous five years and carry out activities such as those described below may be taxed in IRS at a special rate of 20% on net income in categories A and B earned within the scope of these activities for a period of 10 consecutive years from the year of their registration as resident in Portuguese territory (Article 58-A of the Statutory Law no. 82/2023, of December 29th; Decree-Order no. 352/2024/1, of December 23th and Decree-Order no. 52-A/2025/1, February 25th).

Activities: Teaching in higher education and scientific research, including scientific employment in entities, structures, and networks dedicated to the production, dissemination, and transmission of knowledge, integrated into the national science and technology system, as well as employment and membership of corporate bodies in entities recognized as technology and innovation centers, within the scope of Decree Law no. 126-B/2021, of December 31st (Paragraph 1a), Article 58-A of the Statutory Law no. 82/2023, of December 29th).

To be included in the scope of the IFICI Regime, professors and researchers must register for the above mentioned regime directly on the Tax and Customs Authority Portal, in the menu Services\Tax Benefits\IFICI Registration\Submit Request (https://processos.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/contrbenfisc/entregar-pedido), after authentication with personal credentials.

Registration involves completing the online registration form (approved by Order no. 2416-A/2025, of February 20th) and submitting the following documents.

- Copy of the certificate of academic qualifications

- Copy of the employment contract or scholarship contract

- Proof of the employee's registration with Social Security carried out by the employer (in the case of a scholarship contract, if applicable, proof of registration with Voluntary Social Security must be sent)

- Declaration issued by the employer describing, in detail, the functions performed by the professor/researcher in the scope of teaching and scientific research  

The deadline for registration at the IFICI Regime is January 15th of the year following the year in which the professor or researcher becomes a resident in Portuguese territory.

A transitional regime is currently in place, during which a special deadline has been set, namely: the inclusion in the IFICI Regime can be done until March 31st, 2025, if the professor or researcher became a tax resident in Portugal during 2024.

Foi divulgada a confirmação da existência de um novo anfiteatro na cidade romana de Ammaia, situada na freguesia de São Salvador da Aramenha, concelho de Marvão, no âmbito de uma campanha arqueológica que contou com a participação do Centro de Arqueologia da Universidade de Lisboa (UNIARQ) e da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL).

Na sequência de candidatura apresentada em dezembro de 2018, o Mestrado em Tradução da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL) passou a integrar, desde junho de 2019, a Rede Europeia de Mestrados em Tradução (European Master's in Translation), um projeto de cooperação entre a Comissão Europeia e instituições de ensino superior. A lista das Escolas cujos mestrados em Tradução pertencem à rede EMT pode ser consultada no website.

A cerimónia de celebração do Dia da Universidade, que se realiza no próximo dia 23 de Julho, será marcada pela inauguração de uma nova residência universitária da Universidade de Lisboa, no Campus da Ajuda.
